Bhutan experiences a variety of climates due to its diverse topography, ranging from subtropical lowlands in the south to subalpine conditions in the north. Understanding Bhutan’s seasons will help you plan the perfect time for your visit.
Spring (March to May): Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Bhutan. The weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F), and the valleys are in full bloom with wildflowers, especially the famous rhododendrons. It’s also the time for many of Bhutan’s cultural festivals, making it ideal for those interested in the country’s religious and cultural life. Trekking conditions are excellent, with clear skies and mild temperatures.
Summer (June to August): Summer in Bhutan coincides with the monsoon season, particularly in July and August. The southern parts of Bhutan receive heavy rainfall, while the central and northern regions see less precipitation. While the rain brings lush greenery
and fewer tourists, travel may be challenging due to wet and muddy roads. Summer temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F), with high humidity in the lowlands.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is considered the best time to visit Bhutan. The weather is cool and crisp, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 23°C (50°F to 73°F). This season offers spectacular views of the snow-capped Himalayas, making it a prime time for trekking and outdoor activities. Autumn is also festival season, with the Thimphu Tshechu and Wangdue Tshechu attracting visitors from all over the world.
Winter (December to February): Winter in Bhutan is characterized by cold temperatures, especially in the highlands where temperatures can drop below freezing. However, the lower valleys (like Paro and Punakha) remain relatively mild, with daytime temperatures around 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). Winter is ideal for those seeking solitude and panoramic views of snow-covered peaks. The climate remains dry, and clear skies make it a good time for photography and cultural exploration.
